Youth consultation groups

Is politics boring?

Not when it’s the United Kingdom Youth Parliament (UKYP) or Youth 10

What is the UKYP?

The UKYP is a national organisation made up of young people like you who want to speak out on issues which concern you.

You can stand for election to represent the views of young people in your area if:

  • You are between 11 and 18 years of age
  • You live in Wokingham Borough

Each year in September there will be posters in every youth centre and school. Any young person who is interested in speaking out for young people can come along to the annual Speak Out Day held during Local Democracy Week to find out more information and learn some of the skills necessary.

What is Youth 10?

Youth 10 is the Youth Forum developed in 2001 by a group of young people from the Youth Centres in Wokingham Borough to represent the issues, views and opinions of all young people in Wokingham Borough.

Today as a member of Youth 10 you can expect to have a voice on issues and also inform and be consulted on Council policies. You will also have a role in supporting the MYP and Deputy MYP. As a group, you will plan your own programme of activities and events supported by your Youth Worker.

In addition, there will be an opportunity to get involved in sub-groups on specific issues- this will be an optional extra which you may or may not wish to get involved with depending on your availability and personal interests.

Special Annoucement:

If you have an idea that will benefit young people in our Borough we may be able to provide the money to make it happen. Our group is managing the Youth Opportunities Fund.

How much will it cost?

All meetings, including the residential, are free.

Wherever possible, we will try to help with travel costs, meals and any resources you may need to do your job representing the young people of our unitary authority. You may want to buy occasional snacks and drinks at some events.

Special needs

We want everyone to be able to take part. The range of special need that individuals have is vast and may include:

  • Wheelchair/mobility access and support
  • Sign language or other language interpreters
  • Childcare or you may be a Young Carer
  • Large print text/ Braille/ audio taped letters
  • A personal support worker

We are committed to equality of opportunity for all. Let us know what your needs are and we will work with you to try to find the best way to enable you to be an active member of Youth 10.

How do I join?

If you are aged between 11 and 18 and interested in speaking out, getting involved and making a difference you are welcome to join. All you need is commitment and enthusiasm in taking part in the activities and you must be willing to have fun.
