Travel to school

Wokingham Local Education Authority - LEA - has a duty to provide transport where:

  • A child is under the age of 8 and lives more than 2 miles from their designated school
  • A child is aged 8-16 years and lives more than 3 miles from their designated school

School travel plans

A school travel plan puts forward a package of measures to encourage safer, healthier and more sustainable travel choices on the school journey.

It is backed by a partnership involving the School, Education and Transport Officers from the Local Authority, the Police and the Health Authority and is based on consultation with teachers, parents, pupils and governors and other local people.

The main aim is for all schools to have a School Travel Plan in place by 2010 to help:

  • Create a safer environment around the school gates
  • Encourage responsibility and independence on the school journey
  • Establish safer walking and cycling routes in the vicinity of the school
  • Reduce congestion in the area around the school
  • Reduce pollution
  • Improve road safety awareness
  • Improve the health and fitness of pupils
  • Schools reach the Healthy Schools Standard
  • Link in with the National Curriculum
  • Achieve OFSTED approval
  • Capital grant funding for state schools

Special educational needs

Special education transport is provided, based on a child's individual needs.

If you choose to send your child to a school that is further away from their home than another school that can meet their special education needs, you will be responsible for arranging and funding the transport to that school.

The Special Educational Needs Service will undertake a Transport Needs Assessment to determine the type and level of provision required for each child. This will take into account the child's:

  • Age
  • Physical disabilities
  • Learning disabilities
  • Mental health problems
  • Mobility difficulties
  • Communication difficulties
  • Behavioural difficulties
  • Dependence on mobility aids
  • Dependence on personal support and/or assistance
  • The nature of journeys to be undertaken
  • Other relevant factors
