Infant and primary school admissions

It is vital that you are happy with the school you select for your child’s education. We recommend you visit local schools to help with this decision.

Primary admissions scheme

Primary admissions are co-ordinated by the local authority. The scheme includes:

  • A shared timetable
  • A single applications process
  • The sharing of information
  • A single letter offering a place

All preferences will be treated on an equal basis, taking account of the admissions criteria. Where there is potential to offer a place at more than one school, the single offer will be for the school the parent ranked highest. If you do not receive an allocation of a preferred school/s you will be informed of your right of appeal.

Applicable school ages

We will accept applications for those children born between September 1, 2006 and August 31, 2007 who may start Primary/Infant school from September 2011.   Parents and carers who require a place in a Wokingham Borough primary or infant school will need to apply - either by paper application or online - for a place by January 14, 2011.

All Wokingham Borough schools will offer full time places from September 2011.  Parents can request that the date their child is admitted to the school is deferred until later in the school year or until the child reaches compulsory school age in that school year and parents can request that their child attends part-time until the child reaches compulsory school age.   In such instances the school places will be held for that child and not offered to another child.  School places will not be held beyond the academic year for which the original application was accepted.

Where the option of deferment is taken up and the child remains with the existing early years provider in the private, voluntary, independent (PVI) sectors or in a maintained nursery class they will continue to be eligible for the free entitlement of a part time funded place of fifteen hours a week.

Wokingham Borough residents

If you pay Council Tax to Wokingham Borough Council you should complete our application form for any primary or infant school within the Borough, or for application to schools in other authorities.

To receive an application pack, please complete the schools interest form.

If you have not received a pack by mid-December, please contact the School Admissions Team.

Residents of other authorities

You must apply for schools using the application form provided by your home local authority.  If you are considering a place at a Wokingham Borough school, then it is recommended that you read our Parent's Guide, available in November 2010 in hard copy, to understand the basis on which places will be allocated.  Your local authority will forward your child's application to us.

The guide is also available for download from this page on September 10, 2010.

Apply by January 14, 2011 - our online school admissions service will be available from November 29, 2010

Regardless of start date, if your child is born between September 1, 2006 and August 31, 2007 the application form should be completed and returned by January 14, 2011. Forms received after this date will be treated as a late application and will be processed after the main allocation.

The governors of the eight church aided schools continue to be the admissions authority for their schools but we will act on their behalf to co-ordinate admissions using the application form. Additional information may be required for entry into these schools - see below - and details of what will be required will be sent to you by the authority or by the school, if you list one of these schools as a preference. The individual school policies for 21011/12 are available.

Key dates:
  • late November 2010 – application packs distributed.

  • November 29, 2010 - website open for online applications

  • January 14, 2011 – closing date for applications and deadline for providing evidence of where you live to meet designated area and other criteria

  • April 21, 2011 – parents sent notification of school allocated

  • May 5, 2011 – deadline for parents to accept the place offered, submit notification of appeal and waiting list information available
