Rats, mice and cockroaches are the main pests that food proprietors need to look out for. Food legislation requires a food business operator to ensure good food hygiene practices, including protection against contamination and, in particular pest control.
Pest control
Although it is not a legal requirement to have a contract with a pest control company, it is strongly recommended and shows a commitment by the food business operator to ensuring a premise remains pest free. See our
pest control pages for more details.
Pest prevention
Here is a list of ways to prevent pest problems from occurring:
Ensure food is stored in pest proof containers
Regular removal of domestic waste
Correct storage of domestic waste inside and outside of premises
Good housekeeping practices and standards maintained
Ensure the premises is pest proof ie. any gaps and holes to external doors, windows, pipes, drains etc. must be filled or covered with a solid, durable material in order to minimise pest entry points into food preparation and storage areas
Ensure doors and windows are closed at all times or fitted with insect-proof screens
Set up a contract with a pest control company or ensure regular visual checks are carried out
Ensure your land does not allow harbourage for rodents and insects by clearing and disposing of any rubbish and undergrowth
