Pests

Rats, mice and cockroaches are the main pests that food proprietors need to look out for. Food legislation requires a food business operator to ensure good food hygiene practices, including protection against contamination and, in particular pest control.

Pest control

Although it is not a legal requirement to have a contract with a pest control company, it is strongly recommended and shows a commitment by the food business operator to ensuring a premise remains pest free. See our pest control pages for more details.

Pest prevention

Here is a list of ways to prevent pest problems from occurring:

  • Ensure food is stored in pest proof containers
  • Regular removal of domestic waste
  • Correct storage of domestic waste inside and outside of premises
  • Good housekeeping practices and standards maintained
  • Ensure the premises is pest proof ie. any gaps and holes to external doors, windows, pipes, drains etc. must be filled or covered with a solid, durable material in order to minimise pest entry points into food preparation and storage areas
  • Ensure doors and windows are closed at all times or fitted with insect-proof screens
  • Set up a contract with a pest control company or ensure regular visual checks are carried out
  • Ensure your land does not allow harbourage for rodents and insects by clearing and disposing of any rubbish and undergrowth
