Giardia are microscopic parasites which grow in the intestines of infected humans or animals. Giardia cause diarrhoeal disease in humans.

Direct contact with infected animals or humans. Consumption of water or food contaminated by faeces of infected animals or humans. Swimming in contaminated water. Spread within families is common. Many cases are associated with recent foreign travel.
Symptoms
There is a long incubation period of 5 to 25 days. Symptoms include diarrhoea and abdominal cramps.
