Food complaints

The Food and Health and Safety Team investigate complaints about hygiene within and around food premises, alleged contaminated and/or unfit food.

Complaints about products

If your complaint is in regards to the quality of a product, product description, packaging information, labelling, date coding, incorrect weight, wrong measurers, please call Trading Standards on 0118 974 6765 or email: trading.standards@wokingham.gov.uk.

Food contamination

Problems that can arise with food are usually due to faults during production, handling, storage, transportation or naturally occurring effects:

  • Physical - pieces of wood, plastic, metal, insects, jewellery, and plasters
  • Chemical - cleaning fluids, pesticides, naturally occurring toxic chemicals
  • Microbiological - bacteria and germs from dirt, raw food, people, and animals
  • Spoilage - mould, slime, changes in colour/odour and/or texture

Examples of the contaminants listed above are illustrated in the common food complaints page.

We regret that we do not investigate anonymous complaints. We also do not look to secure compensation in the course of our investigation as this is a civil matter. We will fully investigate all complaints to make sure that no offence has been committed and try to stop them from reoccurring in the future.

How to complain

If you are unhappy and believe you have grounds to complain about food that you have purchased within the Borough of Wokingham, you have a number of options available to you:

  • To contact the retailer and let them investigate your complaint
  • To contact the manufacturer and let them investigate your complaint
  • Take your complaint to a solicitor and take their advice
  • Contact our Food and Health and Safety Team and ask them to investigate the matter on your behalf

If you live within the Borough and purchased the food item from outside of the Borough eg: in Crowthorne - Bracknell Forest Borough Council, or Reading - Reading Borough Council, you may still contact us and we will arrange to collect the food sample and/or relevant information from you and then pass it onto the relevant authority on your behalf. That authority will then contact you themselves in regards to your complaint and carry out any investigation deemed appropriate.
