What's going to change

A summary of the changes we're making

  • We’ll deliver your new black wheeled rubbish bin at some point between 20 May and the end of July. We’ll ask you to start using it from mid-August 2024, replacing the current blue bag system.

  • We’ll then start emptying your wheeled bin every fortnight, instead of the weekly bag collections, to help us reduce our borough’s environmental impact and make essential savings.
  • Your wheeled bin will hold 180 litres, about two full blue bags’ worth of rubbish. You may need to recycle more or reduce your waste as we’ll only take one full bin per collection.
  • We’ll also be collecting your recycling from your usual green bags every other week, on the weeks when we don’t empty your wheeled rubbish bin.
  • Your food waste collection will remain weekly and the optional garden waste collections will remain fortnightly.

Example collection schedule (from August 2024)

What your weekly bins will look like

When your bin will arrive, and what happens next

We’ll start delivering wheeled rubbish bins on Monday, 20 May and it'll take several months to reach every household. You must not use your bin straight away, as it won't be emptied before mid-August.

Your regular collection day isn’t going to change, but you’ll need to put your rubbish and recycling out on the correct weeks or they won't be collected.

Before collections change, you'll receive a calendar showing which of your collections fall in each week until July 2025. You'll also be able to look up your rubbish and recycling weeks on our website.

Until the service changes, you should keep putting out rubbish in your blue bags as normal. We delivered a roll of 20 blue bags earlier this year to cover the final months of the current service.
