Housing and community development

We, like most of Southeast England, are experiencing a housing shortage.

Our vision for providing the majority of the needed housing, is through 4 strategic development locations:

We’re also working to regenerate the Gorse Ride Estate to provide high quality homes.

These major developments will accommodate a total of about 10,000 homes in carefully planned new or extended communities, by 2026. To help people move in and around the borough, the major developments also include new roads. Look at our Strategic Roads and Highways Map to find out more.

Greenways Programme

Our vision is to connect the borough in a sustainable way by providing greenways. This is a network of routes which will encourage walking and cycling and will be provided by both the Council and housing developers.

Local Plan Update

Work is currently underway on an updated local plan which will shape the future of Wokingham Borough. See our Local Plan Update page for more information.

Wokingham Town Centre Regeneration

The Wokingham town centre Masterplan (PDF document) sets out our vision for the town centre. Much of the plan is now complete with works finished at Peach Place, Market Place, the expansion of facilities at Carnival Pool and a new park, cinema, hotel and shops at Elms Field.
